A generator with a commutator produces direct current.
A commutator in a DC generator collects the current generated in the armature conductors. In the case of an alternating current motor, the commutator assists in providing current to the armature conductors. A commutator is made up of a series of copper segments that are insulated from one another. The commutator in a generator reverses current direction, with each turn acting as a mechanical rectifier to convert alternating current from the windings to unidirectional direct current in the external load circuit.
