Detailed Solution

A goalkeeper pulls his hand backward after holding the ball to decrease the rate of change of momentum.
According to the second law of motion, the force applied by an object is equal to the rate of change of momentum. Therefore, the goalkeeper allows some time for the ball to hit his/her hand as the momentum change rate is time-dependent. Thereby decreasing the rate of change of momentum and hence decreasing the force of hitting the ball.
