A Grand Durbar was organised in 1877 to acknowledge Queen Victoria as the ruler of India. After the Revolt of 1857, the British colonial government wanted to establish its dominance again. It was fully aware of the symbolic importance of Delhi. During the revolt, the British colonial government concluded that people still saw the Mughal Emperors as their leaders, and it was important to change this point of view. In 1877, a Grand Durbar was organised in Delhi for this specific purpose, even though the country's capital was Calcutta.
