Detailed Solution

According to Newton's law of cooling, the rate of cooling is directly proportional to the temperature difference of the body to the surroundings.

  dTdt=-β(TT0)

Initially the rate of cooling will be maximum, the rate of cooling will be halved when the temperature difference between the body and surroundings is halved.

  1βdTTT0=-dt

1βlnT-T0T1T2=-t

1βlnT2-T0T1-T0T1T2=-t

Here, T2-T0T1-T0=12

So, the time in which the rate of cooling is half of the maximum rate is given by t=ln2β
