A large part of the Balkan region was under the control of the Ottoman Empire. In 1905 Slav nationalism gathered forces in the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires. Slav nationalism was a movement of political ideology. Their main focus was the unity and integrity of the Slavic peoples. With the spread of the idea of nationalism, the Slavic nationalists' struggle started in the nineteenth century to gain independence from the Ottoman Empire. These Slavic states were very small in size and jealous of each other. They were ready to gain independence at the cost of others. The members of this community resided in eastern and southeastern Europe.
