A large portion of the Balkans region was under the control of the Ottoman empire. The Balkans was an area of geographical and traditional diversification consisting of modern-day Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Greece, Macedonia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Serbia, and Montenegro, whose inhabitants were broadly classified as the Slavs. A large portion of the Balkans was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. Throughout the nineteenth century, the Ottoman Empire had aimed to be stronger through modernisation and internal reforms but with very little growth. As a result, the Balkan people raised their claims for independence or democratic rights on nationality. They used history to prove that they had once been liberated but had subsequently been suppressed by foreign powers. Therefore, the defiant nationalities in the Balkans struggled to win back their long-lost independence.
