Detailed Solution

A large part of the Balkans was under the control of the Ottoman Empire in the early 19th century. Modern-day Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Greece, Macedonia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Serbia, and Montenegro were all formerly part of the geographically and ethnically diverse Balkan area, which was populated mostly by people who were collectively referred to as Slavs. The Ottoman Empire governed a sizable portion of the Balkan region. Together with the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the development of romantic nationalism ideals throughout the Balkans created an extremely volatile situation. The Ottoman Empire attempted, but failed miserably, to modernise and undergo internal changes in the Balkans. After 1871, the Balkan region served as Europe's most significant catalyst for nationalist unrest.
