Detailed Solution

A Madarsa was set up by British officials in Calcutta in 1781. Influenced by Orientalist ideas, many Company officials argued that the British should promote Indian rather than Western learning. They supported institutions that encouraged the study of ancient Indian texts and taught Sanskrit and Persian literature and poetry. Orientalism would win a place in the hearts of the “natives”. Orientalists set up a madrasa in Calcutta in 1781 to promote the study of Arabic, Persian and Islamic law. They also established the Hindu College in Benaras in 1791 to encourage the study of ancient Sanskrit texts.
