Magnetic poles always occur in pairs. It is not possible to separate the two  poles of a magnet. If we break a bar magnet he new pieces will automatically have two poles, that is the north and south poles. They always comes in pair so a magnet is said to be dipolar. Like poles of magnets repel each other whereas unlike poles of magnet attract each other.
