Given that a manufacturer makes 1200 articles at Rs 2.50 each. He marks each of them at such a price that if only 800 articles are sold, he would make a profit of 40% of his outlay.
Total cost price (CP) is,
CP

= Number of articles \times Cost of each articles

\Rightarrow

= 1200 \times 2.50

\Rightarrow

CP=Rs.3000
Let marked price of articles

= Rs . x

So, selling price of 800 articles (SP)

= Rs . 800 x

Manufacturer gets 40% profit after selling 800 articles.
We know that,

SP = CP + Profit

\Rightarrow 800 x = 3000 + 40 % of 3000

\Rightarrow 800 x = 4200

\Rightarrow x = \frac{42}{8}

\Rightarrow x = Rs . 5.25

Now, since manufacturer solds

articles at marked price and remaining 360

(1200 - 840 = 360)

So, in this case, total selling price will be,
Total SP= Selling price of 840 articles + Selling price of 360 articles
(SP')

= (840 \times 5.25) + (360 \times (60 % of 5.25))

\Rightarrow S P^{'} = 4410 + 360 \times \frac{60}{100} \times 5.25

\Rightarrow S P^{'} = 44410 + 360 \times 0.6 \times 5.25

\Rightarrow S P^{'} = 4410 + 1134

\Rightarrow S P^{'} = Rs . 5544

So,

Profit = S P^{'} - CP

\Rightarrow Profit = 5544 - 3000

\Rightarrow Profit = 2544

∴ Profit percentage = \frac{profit \times 100}{CP}

\Rightarrow Profit percentage = \frac{2544 \times 100}{3000}

\Rightarrow Profit percentage = 84.8 \sim 85 %

Thus, profit percentage is 85%.
Therefore, the correct option is 2.
