Detailed Solution

A massive four-volume collection of Tamil folk tales, 'The Folklore of Southern India', was written by Natesa Sastri.
At the end of the 19th century, nationalists began to record folktales ( sung by the bards) and travelled to villages to gather folk songs and legends. The folk songs and folktales provided a true vision of the Indian traditional culture, which was destroyed by outside forces. Many people tried to preserve the traditional culture. As a part of this, Natesa Shastri in Madras published 'The Folklore of Southern India'. It was a collection of Tamil folk tales. He considered folklore as national literature and the most trustworthy manifestation of people's real thoughts and characteristics.
