Detailed Solution

A metal Y burns in air on strong heating form oxide YO. It reacts with HCl as well as NaOH to form salt and water. The nature of the oxide is amphoteric.
Amphoteric oxides are oxides which can act as either acid or base in the reaction. The amphoteric oxide ions are held too strong in a solid lattice to react with water. Aluminium oxide, beryllium oxide, tin oxide, zinc oxide are amphoteric in nature. When they react with acid and base, they form salt and water. The element Y can be Zinc (Zn) and the oxide formed can be ZnO.
