A mirage in the desert happens due to the reflection of the light.
The refraction of light is what causes mirages. Because of the temperature difference, air near the ground is rarer. As they move continuously from a denser to a rarer medium, the light rays coming from the object toward the ground keep deviating from the norm. Near the ground, the medium becomes increasingly scarce, and at some point, complete internal reflection occurs. The light ray's direction changes to upwards at this point. These light rays appear to be coming from a closer source when they enter our eyes. This is the cause of mirage formation.
