When a negatively charged ebonite rod is brought in contact with the plate of the negatively charged gold leaf electroscope, the divergence between the leaves increases. And, when an ebonite rod having a positive charge is put in contact with the plate of the negatively charged electroscope, the divergence of leaves decreases. This is because similar charge repels each other, and unlike charges attract each other.
