Inertia is the property of matter which resists change in motion. It is a property of matter by which it continues in its existing state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line, unless that state is changed by an external force. In a bus, the passengers' feet and body are attached to the ground and seat whereas their head is not. Therefore, the feet and bodies of the passengers experience a force due to the acceleration of the bus, but their head remains at rest. As the upper part of the passenger's body remains at rest while the lower part moves with the bus, the passengers tend to fall back.
