A peace treaty was signed in 1998 between the UK government and the Nationalists that brought the conflict in Ireland to an end. The Belfast Agreement was a peace agreement signed in 1998. Because it was negotiated on Good Friday, April 10, 1998, the Belfast Agreement is sometimes known as the Good Friday Agreement. A violent and brutal ethnic-political war had been taking place in the UK for a long time between Catholics and Protestants. Fifty-three per cent of the people there were Protestants, and 44 per cent were Roman Catholics, who made up the two largest Christian denominations. Catholics were represented by Nationalist parties, who pushed for the unification of Northern Ireland with the Republic of Ireland, a country with a sizable Catholic population. Unionists, who desired to stay in the primarily Protestant UK, served as the Protestants' representatives. The conflict resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people. Finally, the Agreement decided to terminate their military conflict and agreed on a shared power structure between Unionists and Nationalists.
