A planter with 1,000 bighas would need 2,000 ploughs.
Under the NIJ cultivation, the planters required more labourers because the indigo plantation was vast and needed labourers in large numbers. The need for labourers grew at times when peasants were busy cultivating rice. They required large numbers of ploughs and bullocks because a planter with one bigha required two ploughs, and a planter with 1,000 bighas required 2,000 ploughs for indigo cultivation.
A big problem was an investment in the maintenance and purchase of ploughs because the peasants were also busy with their rice cultivation and plough supplies were not easily available.
