A public meeting was held on April 13,1919 in Jallianwala Bagh. Police in Amritsar opened fire on a peaceful unarmed gathering on April 10th, setting off a wave of violence. General Dyer assumed command once martial law was enacted. The tragic Jallianwalla Bagh tragedy happened on April 13, 1919. On that day, a sizable crowd gathered at Jallianwalla Bagh's walled-off grounds. Some people showed up in protest of the government's recent harsh actions. Others had travelled to take part in the yearly Baisakhi fair. Many of the peasants were from outside the city and were unaware that martial law had been enacted. Hundreds of people were killed when Dyer invaded the area, closed off the exits, and started shooting at the crowd. He later stated that his goal was to "generate a moral effect," instilling awe and fear in the hearts of the satyagrahis.
