Given,
Duration of each period if there are 9 periods in a day

= 40 minutes

. Let the duration of each period if there are 8 periods in a day be x minutes.
Then,

Duration (in minutes)	40	x
Number of periods	9	8

We can clearly observe that, lesser the number of periods, more will be the duration of each period.
Therefore, this is the case of inverse proportion.
As this is case of inverse proportion, therefore the product will remain constant throughout table that is,

40 × 9 = x × 8

Solving the equation,

8 x = 360 x = 3608 x = 45

Hence, each period would be 45 minutes long if there are 8 periods in a day.
Therefore, option 1 is correct.
