Detailed Solution

A sepoy was an Indian Soldier. Sepoi was an Indian soldier deployed at a European military garrison to provide the coveted personnel to protect the European colonies of Asia. The term "Sepoi" comes from the Persian term 'sipahi', translated into Urdu and Hindi as a generic term for soldiers. Sepoi were essential in maintaining law and order in the new British settlements. They were among the first Indians to reach Singapore's newly established trading port. Apart from defending the island, the sepoys also helped to clear land for settlements and build batteries for defence.
