Detailed Solution

A silkworm enters the second stage of its life in a cocoon known as pupa.
A healthy silk moth lays about 300-400 eggs. When the eggs hatch, silkworm emerges, known as the larval stage. The silkworms feed on mulberry leaves and grow in size. Next, they secrete fine filaments made of protein from the two glands on their heads. The filaments harden when exposed to the air and are known as cocoons. A silkworm spins the cocoon so that it covers it completely and makes a structure like a number eight. They enter the next stage of their lives in the cocoon, known as a pupa.
