The subcontinent began to be covered in small settlements starting in the seventh century. These likely originated in significant villages. They frequently had a Mandapika (or Mandi, depending on the era), where local peasants would bring their produce to sell. A market where local people brought their wares to sell is referred to as a mandapika or mandi in small towns. It served as a significant hub for domestic trade. Along with having market streets with businesses, some towns also have hatta. The local villagers would sell their produce to them through their Mandapika (later called a Mandi). Additionally, they constructed a commercial district with stores along it, known as Hatta (later hat).
