Ethnicity is a social division based on shared culture. These people from the same ethnic group believe in their exact origin owing to cultural or physical similarities, or both. They do not have to be of the same nationality or religion. For example, the major social groups are Tamil speakers (18 per cent) and Sinhala speakers (74 per cent). There are two subcategories of Tamils: Sri Lankan Tamils and Indian Tamils.'. 'Sri Lankan Tamils' (13 per cent) are Tamil natives of the country. The remainder is 'Indian Tamils,' whose forefathers immigrated from India during the colonial period. Sri Lankan Tamils are located in the country's north and east. Most Sinhala-speaking people are Buddhists, while most Tamils are Muslims or Hindus. About 7 per cent of Christians are both Sinhala and Tamil.
