Many 19th-century scholars attempted to establish a theory of unilinear cultural development based on Charles Darwin's views on biological evolution. This now-debunked idea proposed that human social order "evolved" in phases, beginning with animalistic sexual promiscuity and progressing to matriarchy, followed by patriarchy.
