A spring balance is graduated on sea–level. If a body is weighted with this balance at consecutively increasing heights from earth’s surface, the weight indicated by the balance will go on decreasing continuously.
We know that weight of the body, W=mg
Where, m= mass of body and g= acceleration due to gravity.
Acceleration due to gravity, g is the acceleration with which the gravitational force of earth pulls objects towards itself. It acts on every object on earth.
The value of g on surface of earth is g= GMR2
When the object is raised at a height r above the earth’s surface, the value of g acting on it becomes g'= GM(R+r)2
As g go on decreasing when height above the surface is increased, so, the weight indicated by balance will also go on decreasing.
