North India's large Hindi-speaking region was divided into several states. Later, in 1960, Bombay's bilingual state was divided into separate states for Marathi and Gujarati speakers. In 1966, the state of Punjab got divided into Punjab and Haryana, with the former Punjabi speakers (mostly Sikhs) and the latter (who spoke Haryanvi or Hindi rather than Punjabi).
