A streamer goes downstream from one port to another in 8 hours. It covers the same distance upstream in 16 hours If the speed of the man in 3 km / hr, then the distance between the two ports is?

Solution: Let the speed of  steamer in still water is x km/hr

Now, speed of  streamer in downstream = (x + 3) km/hr

$So,\text{\hspace{0.17em}\hspace{0.17em}distance}=(x+3)\times 8$

$=8x+24km/hr$

Speed of  streamer in upstream = (x – 3) km/hr

$So,\text{\hspace{0.17em}\hspace{0.17em}distance}=(x-3)\times 16$$=(16x-48)km/hr$

$Speedofboat\Rightarrow 8x+24=16x-48$

$8x=72$

$x=9km/hr$

$\therefore \text{\hspace{0.17em}\hspace{0.17em}Distance}=(8x+24)km/hr$

$=(8\times 9+24)$

$=(72+24)=96$
