Concept: Stomata are pore-like structures present on the structure of the leaf. Their main function is to enable the process of evaporation of water into the external environment. This phenomenon is called transpiration.

They allow the entry of carbon dioxide in the plant during the process of photosynthesis. The structure of stomata includes two guard cells that are present on either side of the pore. They can turn turgid and flaccid depending on the requirement of opening and closing of the stomatal pore. When the guard cells are turgid, it causes the stomatal pore to enlarge and when the guard cells turn flaccid, the stomatal pore closes. The guard cells are further surrounded by subsidiary cells. Their main function is to support the guard cells.
