Detailed Solution

A Subsidiary Alliance was imposed on Awadh in 1801. It was an agreement between the British East India Company and the princely states of India that gave the English power over the Indian kingdoms. It was written by Lord Wellesley, the Governor-General of India from 1798 to 1805. The French Governor-General, Marquis Dupleix, used it for the first time. However, it was the Nizam of Hyderabad who was the first to consent to a carefully structured subsidiary alliance. In 1799, Mysore and the British created a secondary alliance. Wellesley forced the Nawab of Awadh to accept the Policy of Subsidiary Alliance in 1801. In 1802, Peshwa Baji Rao II imposed similar control over his dominion.
