Detailed Solution

A Supreme Court judge can be removed only when impeachment is passed separately by a two-thirds majority of members of each of the two houses of the Parliament. The removal of judges is an extremely difficult process. Such a strict procedure is necessary to ensure the independence of the judicial system, that is, to minimise the interference of the political executive. For the removal of a judge, a special impeachment motion must be passed in the Parliament, which can only be passed if two-thirds of members of both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha have voted for the motion. So far, no Supreme Court judge has ever been impeached in India.
