Detailed Solution

Given, a traffic signal displays green light for 3 min to allow passage of traffic on a particular road. If the signal is currently displaying green light.
The probability of an event to be occurred is the division of the number of favourable outcomes by the total number of outcomes that is,
Probability of an event =  Number of favourable cases   Total number of cases
Given the traffic signal displays green light for 3 minutes that is, (3×60)   seconds .
The time in which the green light turns red is half a minute.
So, the number of favourable cases is,
Half a minute  = 1 2 ×1 minute  = 1 2 ×60 seconds  =30 seconds    Find the required probability by dividing the number of possible cases by total number of possible cases that is, 30 and 180 respectively.
Probability  =  Number of favourable cases   Total number of cases  = 30 180 = 1 6   The probability that the light will turn red within the next half a minute is 1 6   .
Hence, the correct option is 1.
