Detailed Solution

A triangular slave trade took place between Europe, the Americas, and Africa.
Martinique, Guadeloupe, and San Domingo were three Caribbean colonies that were significant producers of goods like tobacco, indigo, sugar, and coffee. However, the lack of Europeans willing to travel to and work in foreign countries led to a labour shortage on the plantations. The triangular slave trade between Europe, Africa, and the Americas was established to fulfil the labour needs. In the seventeenth century, the slave trade started. From the ports of Bordeaux or Nantes, French traders travelled to the coast of Africa, where they procured "slaves" from regional chiefs. The "slaves" were branded and chained and crammed together onto ships for the three-month trip to the Caribbean. They were bought by plantation owners there.
