Detailed Solution

a) Maximum potential is obtained when cells are connected in series in such a way that the negative terminal of the cell is connected to the positive terminal of the second cell, and so on. Cells connected in series give a greater resultant voltage than individual cells. Voltage increases as the number of cells increases.

Hence the correct option is (a) i.

                                                                                                                         OR

b) As we know,

work done = charge × potential difference

Since, charge = current × time

Therefore,

work done = (current × time) × potential difference

Or,

potential difference = work done ÷ (current×time)

Hence option a)

work done ÷(current×time)

is correct
