$\sin \mathrm{\theta }$ is given slightly greater than $\frac{1}{{\mathrm{n}}_1}$. If  'n₂' medium was not present then ray would have suffered TIR at n₁ and air interface.

$\Rightarrow \sin \mathrm{\theta }=\frac{{\mathrm{n}}_2}{{\mathrm{n}}_1}\sin \mathrm{r}\frac{{\mathrm{n}}_2}{{\mathrm{n}}_1}\sin \mathrm{r}\ge \frac{1}{{\mathrm{n}}_1}$
