Heat is a form of energy that can be transferred from one part of the body to another. This is called the transfer of heat. There are mainly three types of heat transfer.

a) Conduction: it is a process in which heat is transferred from the hotter end to the colder end of an object by direct contact.

b) Convection: it is a process in which heat is transferred due to the actual movement of a heated fluid (liquid or gas).

c) Radiation: it is the process by which heat is transferred from one object or place to another, with or without the use of a medium. Here, there is no physical contact between objects or places.

A good conductor of heat can transmit heat by any of these processes, but a bad conductor of heat (an insulator) doesn’t allow heat to transfer from one part of a body to another. A wooden spoon is a bad conductor of heat. So, if it is dipped in a cup of ice cream, its other end does not become cold.
