Abbé Sieyes was a popular name of Emmanuel Joseph Sieyes, a prominent Roman Catholic cleric who was one of the lead characters of the French Revolution. His 1789 pamphlet What Was Third Estate became one of the most influential books on the revolution and helped turn States into Parliaments. Catholic abbot, cleric, and political writer, one of the leading political theorists of the French Revolution (1789–1799); he also held posts in the government of the French Consulate (1799-1804).  He was offered and declined an office in the French Directory (1795–1799). Becoming director in 1799, Sieyès was one of the masterminds of the coup of 18 Brumaire (November 9) that installed Napoleon Bonaparte to power. Furthermore, outside of his political life, Sieyès coined the term "sociology" and contributed to the nascent social sciences.
