ABC is a triangle right angled at B and BD ⊥ AC. If AD = 4 cm, and CD = 5 cm, then the value of AB is 6 cm.
Given,
ABC is a triangle right angled at B and BD ⊥ AC.
AD = 4 cm and
CD = 5 cm.
According to the Pythagoras theorem,
As

Δ A D B

and

Δ B D C

are similar to each other so

∠ A D B = ∠ C D B

∠ B A D = ∠ D B C

= 90 degrees.
So,

D B D A = D C D B

.
Putting values from the question,

D B 4 = 5 D B D B = 20 = 25

Now, by Pythagoras theorem,

B C 2 = B D 2 + D C 2 = 252 + 52 = 20 + 25 B C = 35

Put the values obtained, in

D B D A = B C A B

254 = 35 A B A B = 32 A B = 6

.
Thus,

AB = 6 cm
