A forest which was protected by the forest department is referred to as ‘Villages’. The Amendment of the Forest Act in the year 1878 divided the forests among India into three categories: reserved, protected, and village forests. The Village forests were not under the complete control of the government. The government granted these forests for the extraction of resources by the villagers. If the villages required wood for building houses or for fuel, they could access these village forests and were open to entering into them. No restrictions were placed on the villagers regarding entry into such forest. In contrast, the reserved forests were inaccessible to a villager and were held under government control.
