The Constitution was finalised under the direction of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who served as the Chairman of the Drafting Committee. Dr. Ambedkar made the statement that economic and social democracy- providing everyone in the society with equal opportunities- must go hand in hand with political democracy in his final speech to the Constituent Assembly. The elimination of inequities, such as those between rich and poor or between upper and lower castes, would not follow from simply granting the ability to vote.
