Thomson proposed a model of the atom in 1904 as a sphere of positive matter with electrons positioned by electrostatic forces. J.J. Thomson's cathode ray tube experiments demonstrated that all atoms contain tiny negatively charged subatomic particles or electrons. Thomson proposed the plum pudding model of the atom, which contained negatively charged electrons within a positively charged "soup." Thomson's atomic model did not explain how the positive charge on the electrons inside the atom is maintained. It also failed to explain the stability of an atom. The nucleus of an atom was not mentioned in the theory.
