According to Karl Marx, industrial society was capitalist. Workers produced the profit for capitalists, who owned the capital used to build industries. As long as private capitalists were able to amass enormous wealth, working conditions could not change. The working class had to overthrow the private property system and capitalism. Marx held that workers needed to create a truly socialist society where all property was collectively managed in order to be freed from capitalist exploitation. This society would be communist. Communist society was the natural society of the future, according to Marx.
