The census of India 2011 shows that about 73% of the population of India is literate. More men in India are literate than women. 84.7% of the population of men can read and write, while only 70.3% of women. Also, literate people are higher in urban areas than in rural areas. 87.7% of urban people can read and write, while this number is only 73.5% of rural people.
