Detailed Solution

According to the 1921 census, famines and the plague claimed the lives of 12 to 13 million people.
The war brought about a new political and economic environment. It resulted in a significant rise in defence spending, which was paid for by war loans and rising taxes, including higher customs fees and the introduction of an income tax. Prices rose throughout the war, doubling between 1913 and 1918, making life extremely difficult for the average person. Soldiers were needed from villages, and the forced recruitment of people in rural regions sparked intense resentment. Then, in 1918–19 and 1920–21, crops in many areas of India failed, leading to severe food shortages. There was also an influenza pandemic at the same time.
