Mohammad Pervez Musharraf deposed the democratically elected government of PM Nawaz Sharif and declared himself Pakistan's "Chief Executive". The Seventeenth Amendment Act of 2003, which the Parliament approved on December 31, 2003, inserted a Legal Framework Order into the country's Constitution signed by General Pervez Musharraf. According to this order, issued through a Referendum made in 2002, the President of the country could dismiss the National and Provincial Assemblies. Moreover, the National Security Council, dominated by military personnel, oversaw the civilian government and its many functions. Later, Musharraf declared himself the President of Pakistan.
