Detailed Solution

According to the Supreme Court, the number of manual scavengers in India after the prohibition of the practice in 1993 increased. In 2003, Safai Karamchari Andolan filed a PIL in the honourable Supreme Court. Along with it, several other organisations and some scavengers also were involved. They told the Court that manual scavenging is still going on, and even the government departments are employing manual scavengers. When the Court looked into it, it found that the number of people used in this practice had increased since the law came into effect. It ordered the governments and various ministries to end the course within a particular period.
