Detailed Solution

According to William Adam’s report, there were about one lakh pathshalas in Bengal and Bihar.
William Adam found about one lakh pathshalas in Bengal and Bihar. He was given the responsibility to survey the educational landscape of India. It was in a bid by the British to establish a more British-centric educational system to instil colonial values among the children. He found pathshalas or small schools with less than 20 students. However, the overall number of children taught in these pathshalas was significant- more than 20 lakh. Wealthy persons, teachers (gurus) or the local community established these institutions. These pathshalas had a very flexible and informal way of teaching.
