Acid rain is a type of rain that is more acidic than normal rainwater, with a pH less than 5.6. It is caused by the release of sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), primarily from burning fossil fuels like coal and oil. When these gases react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals in the atmosphere, they form sulphuric acid and nitric acid, which fall to the ground as acid rain.
(1) Carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) are not responsible for acid rain.
(2) Ozone (O3) and dust do not react with water to form acid rain.
(4) Carbon monoxide (CO) does not directly react with water to form acidic compounds. Sulphur trioxide (SO3) can contribute to the formation of sulphuric acid, but it is not as signifi cant a contributor as SO2 to acid rain.
