Detailed Solution

Concept: Activated charcoal is a non-graphite form of carbon having a porous structure.
Charcoal is formed by burning wood at high temperatures. The obtained charcoal is the purest carbon form. The charcoal is passed through many reactions at high temperatures to activate.  Activated charcoal is porous in nature. It is used as an adsorbent and catalyst due to its high surface area. The process of preparation of activated charcoal is called carbonization or calcination. When treated under high temperature, the pores open due to complete combustion. Thus, the activation of charcoal is carried out by heating it with steam to increase porosity.
Hence, the correct answer is option 1.
