Active transport is characterized by-

A- Requirement of special membrane proteins

B- Highly selective in what they carry across the membrane

C- Utilises  ATP as usual energy source to transport substances across the membrane.

Active transport uses energy to transport molecules against a concentration gradient. Active transport is carried out by specific membrane proteins. Like enzymes, the carrier protein is very specific in what it carries across the membrane.
