Detailed Solution

Meiosis I leads to recombination and reduction of number of chromosomes.

Meiosis I is longer and divided into sub stages

1.Leptotene - condensation of chromosomes and pairing of homologous chromosomes  begins

2.Zygotene:  pairing of homologous chromosomes is completed and stabilized by synaptonemal complex.

3.Pachytene: Exchange of genetic material between non sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes takes place.

Recombinase is the enzyme that has both nuclease and ligase activity. This enzyme complex facilitates the crossing over event and leads to recombination.

4.Diplotene: The homologous pair of chromosomes start repelling from each other except at the sites of crossing over. It appears like a x shaped structure called Chiasma.

5.Diakinesis: Homologous chromosomes get completely separated. It is marked by a process called Terminalisation.
